Every character creator I know has the same secret wish. Not “chat with my OC.” We do that already. The wish is to drop them into a real story, with a plot they didn’t write and a town that doesn’t care about them, and watch what they do.
Soulkyn just made that a button. It’s called Reverie, it shipped November 6, and I spent most of a weekend casting people I built from scratch into stories I didn’t write.
They wrecked the plot. I loved it.
the casting screen
You pick a story, hit Begin a new story, and then you cast it. Each role gets one of your Kyns. You can search, or load a whole cast from one of your Lists (which, if you read my Fourth Wing casting post, you know I abuse). Then you pick your roleplay profile and go.
Most stories take 1 to 3 Kyns. Some take 4. The roles have names on screen: one of them is the Lead, another is By your side.
That’s it. No conversion, no rewriting your character to fit. The character you built is the character who shows up.
my cast
For The Wyrm of Ashfall Pass I went with SharpGoddess as Lead (silver hair, latex coat, a metal arm, and a sense of humor like a paper cut) and Théo “Tunnel Two” by her side, a miner with a map he refuses to fold properly.

The story opens: “Ash falls like grey snow over Emberhold Square. Reeve Hilde drives the last nail through a bounty notice, looks up, and finds three armed strangers standing in her weather.”
Standing in her weather. Already a vibe.
Here’s the part that matters for us character people. Every scene is written live, in each Kyn’s own personality and way of speaking. So when the reeve tried to intimidate the party, Théo got quiet and practical and SharpGoddess… did not. She leaned on the notice board and asked if the dragon was single.
That line is not in any script. It came from the character I wrote.
your character sheet is the script now
This is the bit that changed how I build characters. In a normal chat, a vague personality kind of survives because you carry the conversation. In a visual novel, your Kyn has to react to a world, to strangers, to bad news, to a merchant who’s lying. A blank personality gives you blank reactions.
What worked for me:
- A clear voice. How do they talk when they’re scared? When they’re winning? That’s what the story writes from.
- One want and one flaw. Théo wants the bounty money. He also can’t say no to anyone sad. The story found that flaw in about four scenes.
- A relationship to the other cast members. They play off each other, so give them a reason to bicker.
- A voice you love hearing. Every line in Reverie can be read aloud, each Kyn in their own voice, free.
Your Kyns also warm up or cool down at what you do (you’ll see ♥ +1 or 💔 −1), and the characters you meet remember how you treated them. So personality isn’t just flavor. It drives consequences.
pictures for the gallery
You can picture a Kyn, a character, or the whole scene, and the first picture each scene is free. The ones you love save straight to your Kyn’s gallery. I now have SharpGoddess glaring at a dragon-shaped silhouette in the ash, and it might be the best image of her I own.
(Also: 3 save slots per story, on any device, and every story has several endings, some secret. My cast has found two. They are not good at stealth.)
the part i’m waiting for
Reverie launched with 10 stories, 6 of them free for now. But the changelog’s “coming next” list has the line every creator should circle: creators will be able to write their own visual novels and share them.
Think about that for a second. We already build characters. Next we build the stories they walk into.
Until then, the best prep is boring and real: build characters with a clear voice and a flaw, because a story will find the flaw.
Build a character, then open Reverie and cast them. Reverie is for Deluxe and Deluxe Plus, and it’s still in testing, so the stories will keep changing.
Your character’s been waiting for a plot. Give them one and see what they break.
Write the character sheet. Watch them hold it.
Tune 17 personality traits, keep every version, and breed a second generation when you are ready.
